Looking for an alternative to commercial weed sprays?

Like a lot of people you are probably not keen on over using weed sprays and poisons so where possible use this next tip as an alternative. Cooking salt or vinegar works just as well as commercial weed killer and it's really simple to use. To use cooking salt all you do is sprinkle some salt directly onto the weeds you need poisoned and you are done. It will work within weeks of applying. This works extremely well on paving areas work it into the cracks using a broom and you are done. Do not apply cooking salt to garden beds as this will affect the ability to grow plants in the future, best used on areas where you don’t plan on growing anything else pavement areas etc.

To use vinegar, spray it directly onto weeds you want killed, yes it is that simple, be careful not to let run off drift onto plants.

 

When is the best time to fertilise my lawn? 

As a basic rule the start of Spring and again in early Autumn are the best times to fertilise. Buy yourself a cheap fertiliser spreader so that you get an even spread, when spreading by hand it is extremely difficult to achieve this. Warm season grasses such as Buffalo benefit more from fertilising when the weather is warmer as they are more active during this period. We have found using a fertiliser called Munn’s Buffalo Boaster works extremely well for buffalo lawns. Follow directions to the letter and make sure you water this particular product in well. Check local water restrictions before watering.
Another good basic fertiliser for other lawns is manufactured by a company called Scott’s it is readily available from most hardware stores and doesn’t need watering in. As with most gardening products follow the instructions on the pack and you wont go wrong.

When is the best time to prune roses?  

Generally speaking we start our rose pruning from late June through to the end of July.

Things to do this month: it's the right time of the year to apply a general fertilizer such as dynamic lifter, water in well and watch your garden come alive.
